Winter in Lungau

Due to the nearby pistes as well as the Aineck lifts, during the winter months visitors are often focused on skiing and snowboarding, of course. That said, the location of our new apartments is ideal for experiencing all kinds of other wintertime activities as well. Whether physically active or more laid-back, whether outfitted with the latest sporting gear or merely with your hands wrapped around a mug of hot mulled wine: The snowy Lungau Biosphere Reserve, its meadows, forests and, above all, its beautiful villages invite you to experience the joys of winter in its countless forms.

Skiing & Snowboarding in the Lungau Region

Would you prefer to give your winter sports equipment a good once-over during a ski- or snowboarding course to start out? As for those refreshment breaks in between, no doubt you’ll have those down pat from the very outset! Take full advantage of everything our ski schools have to offer, as you learn one of the most beautiful sports there is on the planet. The ski instructors there are happy to help you build on the skills you already have.

The Lungau ski region offers 300 km of pistes in four different ski areas, all of which you can discover using a single ski pass: The “Lungo” is accepted in Obertauern, at the lifts in Grosseck-Speiereck, in the Fanningberg family ski area, as well as at our own local ski area here in St. Margarethen, whenever you prefer to use the Aineck-Katschberg lifts. Carve down beautifully groomed pistes, try your hand at freeriding, and have lots of fun with your youngsters out on the practice hill!

Winters in Motion

The opportunities for outdoor activities in the Lungau countryside are practically unlimited. Set out on a fun-filled tobogganing expedition, learn more about the traditional game of ice stock, and improve your endurance out on alpine cross-country ski trails. Discover the area from a whole new perspective by taking a ride on a horse-drawn sleigh, or gallop through the snow as you enjoy the magic of a wintertime horseback ride. Hike amid nature on snowshoes and plan an intrepid ski tour, for what is sure to be your next unforgettable experience.

Stroll through St. Margarethen and perhaps stop in at local inns along the way for welcome refreshments. Also visit our neighboring community of St. Michael, which, with its wide selection of stores, invites you to amble through the streets and indulge your inner need for some shopping. Tamsweg, which is the county seat in Lungau, is barely a 15-minute drive away, where we also suggest you learn more about its rich history and culture!

Krampus, Saint Nicholas & the Christkindl

Of course, Christmastime is filled with many beautiful moments in Lungau as well. Small Advent bazaars and intimate Advent markets, concerts of music ensembles and choirs, Christmas workshops and Advent exhibitions all underscore the magic of the Christmas season, heightening your anticipation for the arrival of Santa Claus and the Christkind! At the very beginning of December, Lungau communities celebrate a very unusual tradition: parades of so-called Krampus figures, dark characters and a little scary, roaming the streets, jangling their bells and brandishing sticks. Though also accompanied by the good bishop Nicholas, who always comes armed with a basket full of small treats for the youngsters.
